The price of a ton of sugar declined in Egypt today, Monday, after the ban on exporting sugar was extended except for what exceeds market surpluses, according to the latest decision from the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade.
Traders in the Egyptian market explained to Cairo 24 that the price of a ton of local bulk sugar fell by 400 pounds to reach 24.8 thousand pounds.
Traders pointed out that the price of a ton of imported sugar recorded about 23 thousand pounds for loose sugar.
Traders confirmed that the price of a ton of packaged sugar ranges between 25 and 28 thousand pounds.
Egypt bans the export of sugar for six months
The Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade issued an official decision banning the export of all types of sugar for an additional six months.
This decision, No. 394 of 2025, comes with the aim of securing the needs of the local market and ensuring the availability of the commodity to consumers at stable prices.
The decision allows the export of quantities of sugar only if the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade proves that they are surplus to the needs of the local market, and after the approval of the Minister of Industry.
The decision comes at a strategic time, as current global prices do not encourage exports, ranging between $500 and $520 per ton.
The extension came based on a memorandum from the head of the Foreign Agreements and Trade Sector and a letter from the Minister of Supply and Internal Trade stressing the necessity of coordination to maintain market balance, and the decision went into effect as of today.
For his part, Matta Bishai, Chairman of the Internal Trade Committee of the Importers Division of the General Federation of Chambers of Commerce, confirmed that local sugar production is witnessing an unprecedented production abundance.
He attributed this boom to the increase in sugar beet cultivation areas and the improvement in productivity per acre, as a result of the government’s plan to support farmers and encourage the expansion of beet and sugar cane cultivation, in addition to modernizing production lines in local factories. As a result of these efforts, Egypt’s sugar production increased by 34% during the season ending last August, bringing the total production in the current year to 2.964 million tons, compared to about 2.215 million tons in the 2024 production season.
