The Erie County District Attorney’s Office in Buffalo charged a 30-year-old man with strangling his girlfriend and setting fire to their home, resulting in the death of the victim and their newborn child.
According to the official release, Kedan Haile was charged on Thursday, October 23, with second-degree murder, following the deaths of Kathleen “Katie” Carrig, 29, and her 4-day-old baby, Noah.
In detail, according to the People newspaper, on October 18, fire brigades were called to an apartment on Norwood Street after receiving a report of a fire. Upon their arrival, Carrig and her infant were declared dead at the scene, while Hailey was taken to a local hospital after being exposed to smoke inhalation, before he was allowed to leave and placed in custody later.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that “the cause of Noah Carrig’s death is still under investigation,” adding that Haley is accused of “intentionally causing the death of his girlfriend inside their shared apartment,” and that additional charges are expected to be filed against him.
Erie County Prosecutor Michael Kane told a news conference that Haley intentionally suffocated Kathleen Carrig before starting the fire using gasoline.
The Public Prosecutor added, “The cause of baby Noah’s death is still under investigation, but details are expected to be revealed soon.”
