A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck the state of Balikesir, western Türkiye, on Monday evening, and was felt by residents of Istanbul and the surrounding cities.
The Turkish Seismological Center stated that the earthquake occurred after 11 pm local time, without detailing any damage or losses.
Over the past few days, Türkiye has witnessed a series of moderate and light earthquakes, concentrated in the Aegean and Marmara regions, raising fears of increasing seismic activity in the country.
It is noteworthy that Türkiye is located on several active seismic faults, the most prominent of which is the North Anatolia fault, which extends from east to west, and is considered one of the most dangerous faults in the world.
