An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale struck the border area between Peru and Ecuador, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center.

The earthquake occurred at 00:05:41.5 UTC (19:05 local time), at a depth of 35 kilometers below the surface of the Earth, in a geographical location about 41 kilometers south of the Ecuadorian city of Machala, which has a population of about 198 thousand people, and 20 kilometers south of Santa Rosa.
The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center indicated, in its statement, that the earthquake occurred on the western coast of Ecuador, and that there have been no reports so far of human or material losses.
