The World Health Organization expressed its shock at reports that more than 460 people were killed inside the maternity hospital in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, after the Rapid Support Forces invaded the city over the weekend, according to media reports.
The organization’s Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said in a statement on Tuesday that the victims were patients and their companions who were inside the hospital at the time of the attack, stressing that what happened constituted a serious violation of international humanitarian law.
Protect health facilities and their workers and not target civilians
Ghebreyesus added that the organization feels deep horror and shock about what happened, calling for the protection of health facilities and their workers and for not targeting civilians in conflict areas.
These developments come after the Rapid Support Forces were able to control the city of El Fasher, following a siege that lasted for more than 500 days, which further aggravated the humanitarian situation in the region, which already suffers from insecurity and a lack of medical and food supplies.
