On Tuesday, the Spanish government agreed to a “comprehensive” ban on the supply of weapons to Israel, as part of a package of measures aimed, according to Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, to “put an end to the genocide in Gaza.”
The Minister of Economy Carlos Carwarbo said in a press conference after a government meeting, that the decision adopted by the Council of Ministers prohibits the export of all defense equipment, products and technologies used in this field to Israel, as well as its import.
Quirbo added that the text also prohibits requests to transport aircraft fuel that is likely to be used for military purposes, and prohibits the import of products “received from illegal settlements in Gaza and the West Bank” and promoting them.
The minister stressed: “This decision represents a major step forward, which is a pioneer at the international level in the field of imposing a comprehensive ban on the supply of weapons to Israel.”
This decision “is established under the law” a ban on the sale or purchase of military equipment from Israel, which has been applied since the beginning of the Israeli attack on Gaza, according to the Madrid government.
The decision applies immediately, but it still requires the approval of Parliament, as the left government lacks the majority, and has difficulty in approving the laws.
On September 8th, Sanchez announced a series of measures “to put an end to the genocide in Gaza”, which includes the imposition of an arms sales to Israel, and the prevention of ships that carry fuel for the Israeli army from using the country’s ports.
