The city of Saint Catherine is characterized by a wide range of archaeological monuments dating back to historical periods, and these cultural and historical monuments are an integral part of the history of Saint Catherine, especially the Saint Catherine Monastery.
Hossam Sobhi, director of Saint Catherine Antiquities, told Cairo 24 that the Saint Catherine Monastery is one of the most important religious, historical and archaeological sanctities in the city of Saint Catherine and the whole world, and you will find rare artistic works of its kind, such as Russian and Greek icons and mosaics, in addition to caustic paintings and religious decorations.
He emphasized that among the tourist attractions in the city of Saint Catherine is the presence of a series of mountains, which is one of the largest mountain ranges in the entire Sinai region, where the height of the St. Catherine Mountains is about 2.629 m, and the mountains chain can be reached through the Deir Al -Arbaeen, and Mount Catherine or Mount Moses can be climbed on foot or by riding camels until it reaches the top, and enjoy the scenic landscapes, which made this Mountains are one of the most famous tourist attractions in Saint Catherine.
He explained that the main monuments of Saint Catherine are the Saint Catherine Monastery itself, which is one of the oldest monasteries in the world and includes a valuable library and rare groups of manuscripts and icons, in addition to Jabal Musa, Jabal Saint Catherine, the Fatimid Mosque that is within the walls of the monastery, and other sites of historical and religious importance.
The director of the Antiquities of Saint Catherine pointed out that the monastery is the oldest of a working Christian monastery in the world, built in the sixth century AD by order of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I.
