Derborn Heights Police in Michigan has announced a new optional uniform badge bearing the name of the department in both Arabic and English, to be the first of its kind in the United States.
The emblem design and its details
The police explained that the officer, Ermeli Mordook, is the one who designed the new emblem, with the middle of the Michigan state seal, surrounded by the name “Derborn Heights” written in Arabic and English. The aim of the design is to honor the local community and reflect its cultural diversity.
Various community and rich culture
According to the statistics of 2023, people with Middle Eastern or North Africa constitute about 39% of the population of Dearborn Heights, while the percentage in the neighboring city of Derborn is about 55%. This large presence prompted the police to emphasize the importance of representing all components of society.
Different reactions
Police published the emblem picture via Facebook and described it as a way to celebrate the cultures that make the city special, but it disrupted the comments feature on the post to avoid controversy. In her statement, she stressed: “We are proud of creating the officers Mordook and its devotion in helping the department to represent our residents better.”
