Toyota intends to offer three full electric models in South Africa in 2026, according to a senior executive official, to enter a start -up market for electric cars, where competitors, competing Chinese companies, such as BYD, compete with European car manufacturers.

Volvo is currently dominating the sales of electric cars in South Africa, followed by BMW and Mercedes Benz, but Chinese electric car manufacturers have started to invade the market as well, in an effort to enter new markets amid restrictions on exports to the United States of America and Europe.
Toyota is currently selling only hybrid electric cars in South Africa, but it tops the market with a market share of 67% in 2024, with models such as Corolla Cross.
For his part, Andrew Kirby, CEO of Toyota South Africa, told Reuters on the sidelines of a car component conference: We will put battery -running electric cars at the beginning of 2026, so we will have three new battery -running electric cars.
Kirby added: We do not think that one payment system will dominate in the future. Therefore, we will have internal combustion engines, hybrid cars, battery -powered hybrid cars, battery -powered electric cars, fuel cells operating, and perhaps even a neutral combustion engine for carbon.
