Dr. Ali Al -Ghamrawi, Chairman of the Egyptian Pharmaceutical Authority, stressed that the authority considers each request to increase the prices of medicines with all objectivity and transparency, noting that the goal of the authority is to achieve a balanced equation that guarantees the sustainability of local manufacturing and the availability of the drug for the citizen without this constitutes a financial burden on it.

No increase in drug prices with the stability of the exchange rate

Al -Ghamrawi explained, in press statements, that the pricing of medicines in Egypt is carried out according to a compulsory and organized mechanism, like all countries of the world, noting that the Supreme Coordination Committee meets periodically to review requests and follow up on economic changes that may affect the cost of production.

He added that the dollar exchange rate is the main factor in moving the prices of medicines, stressing that there is no intention to increase prices at the present time with the stability of the economic situation, stressing that the authority is committed to maintaining the stability of the market and ensuring the availability of medicines at reasonable prices.

The head of the commission also indicated that in the event of a decrease in the price of the dollar, the drugs will be re -priced and their prices will be reduced in line with economic changes, stressing that the authority adheres to flexible policies based on market variables.

In a related context, Al -Ghamrawi revealed that Egypt represents 27% of the drug market in the African continent, and is the highest in terms of the volume of drug spending, as it is spent four times in Egypt on the drug that is spent in the rest of the continent combined, which reflects the size of the Egyptian market and its regional impact.

He added that the rate of growth in the Egyptian drug market is about 15% annually, which is twice the rate of growth in the African continent, noting that this growth reflects the power of the drug industry in Egypt and its ability to expand and export, as well as enhance investment opportunities in this vital sector.

The head of the commission stressed that the stability of the drug market and achieving a balance between the cost of production and the price of sale is a basic commitment that the authority seeks to preserve, in a way that achieves the interest of the citizen and the factory alike.
