Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment, held an expanded meeting to follow up on the monitoring and improvement of air and water quality at the Ministry of Environment, to determine their readiness to keep pace with the current environmental changes, and to provide accurate data that supports decision -makers, in a way that contributes to protecting the health of citizens and achieving sustainable development goals.

Improving air quality

During the meeting, the Ministry’s efforts to improve air quality were reviewed, through the development and expansion of environmental monitoring networks, as the national network for monitoring air pollutants includes 121 stations distributed in the governorates of the Republic, including 63 automatic stations for instant monitoring and 58 semi -automatic stations, to measure pollutants, including:

  • Solid particles (less than 10 miclome and 2.5 ومر m) sulfur dioxide
  • Nitrogen dioxide
  • Ozone
  • Lead

The efforts of the National Network for Monitoring Industrial Emissions, which links electronically, include 96 industrial facilities across 501 monitoring points, to follow up emissions issued by the chimneys of major establishments around the clock, and ensure commitment to environmental standards. The Minister directed the speedy completion of the transfer of network servers to secure the system.

The Minister listened to an explanation of the early warning system that depends on satellite data and scientific models to expect the air quality of the next three days, with an analysis of the effect of weather factors, and the determination of potential affected areas. The system includes monitoring the burning points, especially within the plan to deal with rice straw, issuing daily reports and continuous data update.

Water quality monitoring

The minister also followed the efforts to monitor water quality through four main programs, including:

  • Nile River water (69 sites)
  • Northern lakes and internal lakes
  • Coast water on Bahrain Red and Mediterranean, Suez and Aqab
  • Any Monitoring Network includes 25 stations

These programs aim to identify pollutants and measure their concentrations, while preparing annual environmental reports and statistical bulletins, following up the cases of transgression, and developing plans for environmental sanitation for violating facilities in coordination with the relevant authorities.
