The International Parliamentary Union expressed its praise and appreciation for the outstanding achievement of the House of Representatives in the Kingdom of Bahrain, as the first legislative council in the region to obtain an ISO certificate for environmental management. The Federation published on its website a report entitled: “The House of Representatives becomes more green and intelligent” in a reference to the achievement achieved by the House of Representatives in the environmental field, the global trend towards green work and optimal investment for environmental resources.

The Secretary -General of the House of Representatives, Muhammad Al -Sisi Al -Buainain, stressed that the praise of the International Parliamentary Union with the qualitative achievement achieved by the House of Representatives, which is to obtain the accreditation of the “ISO 14001: 2015” application for environmental management systems, comes in implementation of the royal aspirations of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the king of the country, and support the efforts of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Prime Minister, in promoting the validity The green environment and sustainable development, encouraging the use of environmentally friendly technologies, achieving the Kingdom of Bahrain’s commitment to the United Nations goals for sustainable development, and supporting leading national initiatives and programs within the framework of the national energy strategy. He explained that this achievement is the fruit and result of the continuous directives of the Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Al -Muslim, and the efforts of the specialized work team in the General Secretariat of the Council.

The report published on the website of the International Parliamentary Union said: The council’s journey towards obtaining this certificate, which was granted in July 2025 AD, included many major initiatives. Solar panels have now been installed that provide part of the building’s energy needs, which reduces dependence on traditional energy sources, and encourages wider use of renewable energy. In addition, the Council expanded its green spaces to improve air quality and support biological diversity.

This step is compatible with the strategic commitment of the Kingdom of Bahrain to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, which sets a model in which other governmental institutions will be followed and supports the United Nations goals for sustainable development. The Council also adopts more sustainable purchase practices, preferring suppliers who adhere to environmental standards when purchasing goods and services.

In the context of its direction towards the digital transformation, the council applied without papers, and developed the practices of the electronic parliament, which led to a sharp reduction in paper consumption, reducing waste, and improving operational efficiency. Artificial intelligence is also used to support the green council’s goals by improving resource management, analyzing energy consumption, and providing management with advanced analytical tools.

These green initiatives are part of the Bahrain Economic Vision 2030 AD, which highlights sustainable development and preserving the environment as two basic pillars of national progress. The approval of the Council comes after the launch of the “Parliamentary for the Planet” campaign of the IPU in March 2023 in Manama, during the Association’s 146 work for the International Parliamentary Union. The campaign is encouraged by parliaments around the world to adopt more environmentally environmental practices, and to enact climatic legislation.

To look forward to the future, the Council plans to build on its current policies through more innovation in the field of renewable energy, the design of sustainable buildings, and the enhancement of environmental awareness. The Council also aims to establish its position as a regional center for exchanging knowledge, as it will provide workshops and guidance for other parliaments interested in advancing environmental reform.
