Dr. Abbas Sharqi, a professor of geology and water resources at Cairo University, revealed that satellite images (Sentinel-1) showed that Ethiopia opened several gates from the upper flood of the Renaissance Dam, August 24, 2025, in a move described as “late” after the dam was filled with about 64 billion cubic meters.

Sharqi said during a post on his personal page, that the current storage is more than last year, which stopped at the limits of 60 billion cubic meters on September 5, 2024, noting that the maximum drainage per gate is about 200 million cubic meters per day, while the upcoming satellite images will determine the number of open gates accurately if weather conditions improve and the sky is free of clouds.
He added that the decrease in the average rainfall rate in the Blue Nile Basin during the first half of the rainy season resulted in the delay in opening the upper flood gates, but the expenses of the “finding” regional climate forecast center indicate the possibility of increasing the amounts of rain during the second half of the season.
Regarding the operation of the turbines, Sharqi pointed out that there is no confirmed information about the number of units that were installed out of a total of 13 planned turbines, stressing that the decline in rain rates will not affect Egypt’s share of the Nile water this year, in light of the reassuring conditions of storage in Lake Nasser.
