Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment, confirmed that the expansion of biomedical energy projects is one of the main pillars to support the green economy and achieve environmental sustainability in Egypt.

This came during its review of the comprehensive detailed study prepared by the Biomedical Energy Corporation for Sustainable Development on the quantities of animal waste generated at the level of the Republic and the possibility of exploiting it in the production of biological gas and organic fertilizer.

Environment: converting 2.6 million cubic meters per day of animal waste into vital gas and organic fertilizer

The minister explained that the study provides an accurate database that can be relied upon in setting plans for future expansion of biogas projects, in order to enhance the state’s dependence on clean energy sources, and achieve environmental, social and economic returns. According to the data received from the Ministry of Agriculture, the total amounts of animal waste available for the production of biological gas are about 2.6 million cubic meters per day, as well as the possibility of producing approximately 60.6 thousand tons per day of organic fertilizer, which contributes to improving the agricultural sector and reducing carbon emissions by about 31.5 thousand tons of carbon dioxide per day.

The study also indicated that Sharkia Governorate topped the list of governorates in terms of the volume of expected production of biological gas, with an amount estimated at 366.7 thousand cubic meters per day, which is a quantity capable of generating electrical energy and reducing emissions, as well as the production of organic fertilizer that enhances soil fertility and reduces dependence on chemical fertilizers.

The Minister stressed the importance of spreading the biogas units of all sizes in the villages of the Egyptian countryside to ensure the safe disposal of animal waste and convert them into resources of high economic value, stressing that converting environmental challenges into investment opportunities enhances the state’s direction towards the green economy.
