In an unprecedented medical achievement, a team of Chinese doctors managed to save the life of a patient who almost lost his head after suffering a strong strike from a robotic arm in an accident on May 31.
The operation, which was described as the first of its kind globally, was conducted at the Shanghai Changching Hospital of the University of Maritime Medicine.

According to a report published by the South China newspaper, the accident led to a complete separation of the cervical vertebrae, causing severe neurological and vascular structures damage, while the spinal cord suffered severe bruises, but it was not interrupted. The doctors explained that the patient arrived at the hospital in a very critical condition after he suffered an immediate paralysis and a heart attack, as well as severe internal bleeding and a severe decrease in blood pressure, which necessitated urgent intervention in large doses of medications to maintain blood circulation.
Chen Hua Giang, director of the hospital’s spinal surgery, said that the review of medical literature locally and globally has not shown any similar case before, stressing that all known similar cases have not yet escaped treatment. He pointed out that the success of this process makes it a historical medical precedent and sets new foundations for dealing with very serious spine injuries.
According to the doctors, the process took long hours and witnessed the participation of a multidisciplinary team to repair the affected vertebrae, rebuild blood vessels and protect the spinal cord.
The medical team emphasized that the patient started to recover gradually, with positive indicators to restore some vital functions, which gives new hope in dealing with injuries resulting from industrial and mechanical accidents.
