China commemorated the sixtieth anniversary of the founding of the Tibetan autonomous area, with a major official celebration with a military parade and political speeches in front of the historic Potala Palace, the former headquarters of the Dalai Lama who fled to India in 1959.
The occasion witnessed the presence of about 20,000 people, amid strict security measures, and the raising of national flags in a large public square in Lhasa.
The celebration came after a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Tibet, in a move bearing strong political connotations.
During the ceremony, the prominent official of the Communist Party, Wang Huning, stressed that “Tibet’s affairs are a Chinese internal affairs, and no external force is allowed to intervene,” stressing that all “attempts to divide the country or destabilize Tibet have failed.”
During the event, the speakers praised what they described as “economic progress” in the region at the foothills of the Himalayas, at a time when Beijing continues its campaigns against what it considers separatist tendencies, which included over decades of arrests of monks and demolishing monasteries within the framework of the policy of tightening control of the region.
