Brazilian President: We will resort to “global trade” to defend our interests and will not contact Trump

Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva said that his country will use all available means, including the World Trade Organization, to defend its commercial interests, against the background of the United States’ willingness to impose new customs duties on Brazilian products.

Da Silva, during a speech delivered at the capital’s effectiveness, stressed that he does not intend to communicate with former US President Donald Trump, due to “the absence of desire on the American side in the dialogue,” describing the decision to impose fees as “one of the most unfortunate days in the history of bilateral relations.”

Trump had issued, at the end of last month, an executive order to impose additional customs duties by 40% on Brazil’s imports, increasing to 50%, justifying this with the recent Brazilia policies, which the American administration considered in line with its interests.

These developments come amid increasing tension in relations between the two countries, against the backdrop of the American position on the ongoing trial against former Brazilian President Jayer Bolsonaro, which relates to accusations of trying to overthrow the results of the presidential elections for the year 2022.
