The “Axios” website revealed today, Wednesday, that the United States of America and its Western allies agreed on a deadline to impose sanctions on Iran, if it does not reach an agreement on its nuclear program.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, France’s foreign ministers, Germany and Britain agreed, during a phone call, to determine, at the end of August, a actual final date to reach a nuclear agreement with Iran, according to sources informed on the call.
The sources said that if an agreement is not reached by this deadline, the three European powers are planning to activate the “rapid return” mechanism that automatically re -imposing all sanctions of the UN Security Council, which was filed under the nuclear agreement with Iran in 2015.
The activation of the “Snap Back” mechanism takes 30 days, and the Europeans want to finish the operation before Russia took over the UN Security Council presidency, in October, according to “Axios”.
According to the site, US and European officials believe that the re -imposition of sanctions on Tehran is a negotiating tool to pressure Tehran and a reserve option in the event of diplomacy failure.
But the Iranians claim that there is no legal basis for re -imposing sanctions, and threatened to withdraw from the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty in response.
The sources said that the call between Rubio and his European counterparts were aimed at coordinating positions on “re -imposing sanctions” forward in nuclear diplomacy with Iran.
