Fashion science set a historic record after selling the first “Perkin” bag from the “Hermès” brand at a public auction of $ 10.1 million in Paris.
The “People” website stated that this bag, which first appeared in 1985, was offered for sale at a public auction that lasted for ten minutes, during which nine enthusiasts of the collection of antiques competed, before it finally settled on an unidentified buyer from Japan, on July 10.
The famous bag was designed during a passing conversation on a 1981 plane between Jean -Louis Douma, CEO of Hermes, and British actress and singer Jane Birkin.
The first version of it was presented in the market in 1985, after Birkin requested that the bag be called in its name.
This original bag broke two records: The first is that it is the second most expensive fashion piece sold in history, after the famous red shoe that Judy Garland wore in the movie “The Wizard of” (1939), which was sold at $ 32.5 million in 2024.
The second is that it became the most expensive handbag sold at an auction, superior to the “Hermes Kelly 28” bag, which was sold for more than $ 500,000 in 2021.
