Traffic fees for the Suez Canal decreased by 54.1% during the period from July to March of the fiscal year 2024/2025, according to the balance of payment of payments issued by the Central Bank of Egypt.

According to the report, the Suez Canal revenues were limited to $ 2.6 billion during the first 9 months of the fiscal year 2024/2025, compared to about 5.8 billion dollars during the same period in the previous fiscal year, due to a decrease in the net load at a rate of 61.9% to be limited to 360.3 million tons.

The report stated that the number of ships crossing from the Suez Canal decreased by 44.8%, which is due to the continued tensions taking place in the movement of navigation in the Red Sea, forcing many commercial shipping companies to turn their path into alternative corridors.

Calculating current transactions deficit

The Egyptian economy witnessed during the period from July to March of the fiscal year 2024/2025 positive developments, as the current transaction account deficit improved by 22.6% to reach about 13.2 billion dollars, compared to about 17.1 billion dollars in the same period in the previous fiscal year, and this improvement came in particular in the third quarter (January 2025).

Despite these positive developments, the July period of the fiscal year witnessed 2024/2025, a total deficit of about $ 1.9 billion for a total surplus of about $ 4.1 billion during the corresponding period. This shift is mainly due to the decline in net flows inside the capital and financial transactions to about 7.7 billion dollars, compared to unprecedented flows of about $ 20.0 billion in the corresponding period, which had included the “Ras Al -Hikma” deal with a value of 15.0 billion dollars.
