In an innovative scientific step, a team of students of the Spanish University of Valencia succeeded in developing gum A unique medicinal called Micrugham, capable of analyzing and getting rid of the fine plastic particles that enter our bodies through food and drink, which pose an increasing threat to public health.
Gum dissolving the fine plastic materials inside the body
According to the student Aitana Ramos, participating in the project, the idea came as a result of the team’s awareness of the absence of practical solutions targeting fine plastic particles within the digestive system.
She added that the solutions currently available focus on water filtration, but there is no effective way to deal with the leaked plastic to our bodies through food, so we thought about a solution from the inside.
The new gum contains two industrial enzymes that are usually used in the industrial field, which, PEASE, contributes to the common PET plastic analysis in food and drinks, and metasa, works to prevent the accumulation of decomposition products inside the body, and helps to get rid of them naturally through urine or stool.
Although gum is still in its early stages as a preliminary model, the team won the UV Motivem award in the health science category, which reflects the importance and ambition of the idea.
The researchers team confirmed that the next step will be to conduct effective and safety tests with the support of research laboratories and faculty members at the university.
The team members said that the choice of gum instead of the tablets came with the aim of reaching a wider audience and providing a product that can be easily taken without the need for medical prescriptions.
While the road is still long for the actual application of this innovation, the project is promising to face one of the most dangerous health threats, which is the accumulation of fine plastic materials in the body.
