The researcher in the Department of Natural and Environment at the Faculty of Education and Administrative and Technical Sciences at the Arab Gulf University, Anwar Jaber Al -Osaimi, raised the repercussions of land activities on the coast of Askar in eastern Bahrain using geographical information systems and remote sensing, with the aim of describing and evaluating these repercussions, in the context of a scientific thesis discussed recently to obtain a doctorate degree, under the supervision of Dr. Sabah Al -Junaid as a chief supervisor, and Dr. Thamer Al -Dawood as an assistant supervisor.
The researcher analyzed six spectral indicators to prepare coverage maps, density and area of vegetable cover variables, drought of soil and the areas built for the study area using the satellite visuals of the Sentinel-2 satellite for the time period from 2015 to 2024, at a monthly rate, and with a number of more than 100 maps representing variables on the surface of the Earth.
The results of the built models indicated that the study area is generally flat, with approximately 40% (approximately 5 km2) from the region, and there are no clear altitudes that affect the movement and flow of torrents.
The hydrological model for the flow of surface water explains that 23% of the area of the studied area is flat and very slim, and that 52% of the Earth’s surface is slightly slope. The built areas increased from 9.7% (1 km2) in 2015 to more than 16%, approximately 2 km2 in 2024.
Al -Osaimi said during the discussion: “The area of the wet areas around the coast remained almost fixed and represents 2.3% (0.3 km2) during the study period, while the green vegetation represents green spaces planted in the homes of citizens, and represents a very small area, and the street network has expanded, and its areas increased from 6.8% (0.9 km2) to 10.5% (1.4 km2).
The results of the spectral indicators indicated that the area is very dry during the study period, which contributes to increasing air pollution with dust and other pollutants. At a time when the outputs of the DPSIR frame analysis reflected the growing wild activities that represent continuous pressure during the past ten years and increase its monitored density, which may lead to an increase in marine pollution in the region.
The study recommended the necessity of developing a clear action plan and a general framework for sustainable management in the region to alleviate the effects of the pressures on it and activate the contents of the strategic plan (Bahrain 2030) to alleviate the effects of the pressures of development projects on the marine and coastal environment.
