United Nations Secretary -General Antonio Guterres expressed his deep concern over the accelerating deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, warning that “the last artery keeps people alive.”

Stephen Dujarric, a spokesman for the Secretary -General, said at a press conference today that Guterres “expresses his regret for the increasing reports of the suffering of children and adults from malnutrition,” stressing that “Israel must adhere to allowing the provision of humanitarian relief provided by the United Nations and other humanitarian organizations, and facilitating it by all available means.”

These statements came at a time when Gaza is witnessing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, with a sharp deterioration in providing food, medicine and basic services. United Nations reports indicate that more than 90% of the two million populations of the sector are totally dependent on humanitarian aid to survive.

The Secretary -General’s warning, while the United Nations and international humanitarian organizations continue their repeated calls to open the crossings and remove obstacles to life -saving aid to the residents of the besieged sector.
