Emotional separation is an introduction to the collapse of marriage

Marriage is not just a legal connection between two people, but rather a humanitarian partnership based on affection, mercy and understanding. Despite the good intentions at the beginning of the relationship, many couples reach the stage of emotional separation, which is a clear indication of the failure of the relationship before until the official divorce is reached. What leads to this collapse?

One of the most important reasons for the failure of marriage is the loss of the ability to communicate sincere and open. When the couple stops talking about their feelings or needs, an emotional gap begins to form, and with time this gap becomes silent but harmful. Speech does not only mean exchanging words, but it is emotional and intellectual participation, and when this type of communication is absent, the relationship weakens and loses its warmth.

The repetition of neglect or reducing the other, leads to hidden anger, then to indifference, which is the stage that precedes emotional separation.

Also, neglect and coldness of feelings are among the most reasons that lead to the erosion of marital relationships from within. When attention is absent, the small details that feel the other side are neglected, the relationship begins to decline gradually. The coldness of feelings does not appear suddenly, but rather sneaks silently across the days, by not expressing love, ignoring emotional needs, or dealing with the partner as if it is a matter of it.

This emotional drought generates a feeling of loneliness even in the existence of the other, and creates a psychological distance that is difficult to overcome over time, which paves the way for emotional separation, if not being treated early in containment.

Punitive silence

Punitive silence is one of the most common and hidden form of psychological violence in relations, and it occurs when one of the parties intends to ignore the other or refrain from talking and interact with it as a way to punish or pressure it.

This type of silence does not express calm or desire to avoid conflict, but rather a tool for control and emotional harm, as the recipient party feels negligence, rejection, and lack of value. The repeated punitive silence leads to destabilizing confidence, erosion of intimacy, and pushing the relationship towards emotional separation, because it closes the door of dialogue, and prevents any attempt to resolve differences in a mature and healthy way.

Many people may enter into marriage, and they carry an ideal image of the partner or relationship. And when these expectations are not achieved, frustration and let down begin. Failure to agree between reality and expectations, without serious attempt to understand and adapt to the other, leads to psychological separation before actual separation, especially if he accompanies a permanent feeling of dissatisfaction or disappointment.

Marital life needs moral support and mutual appreciation. When one of the two partners feels invisible, or that his efforts are not observed, he begins to withdraw emotionally and emotional neglect is a high way towards estrangement, and the absence of gratitude weakens the desire to give, which leads to the other side’s feeling of inappropriateness, and thus the relationship declining to a level of frigidity with which it is difficult to continue.

Daily pressures such as work, money, responsibilities, and raising children are real challenges in marital life. With the absence of methods of resolving differences maturely, problems turn into frequent crises, and the essence of the relationship is lost. Couples who do not have communication and conflict skills often find themselves in a permanent conflict, either ending with silence or painful emotional separation.

Also, betrayal – whether actual or emotional – creates a difficult crack. Confidence when it is broken, it is difficult to restore without a deep and honest commitment to both sides. In the event that the wound is ignored or denied, the continuation of the relationship becomes merely a social representation without a soul, in which the feelings are eroded, and the two partners turn into strangers under one roof.
