Today, the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi, witnessed direct and essential talks that brought together the Prime Minister of Armenia Nicole Pashinian and the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, in an important step towards ending the conflict between the two countries about four decades ago.

This meeting, which was described by Azerbaijani sources as a “very constructive atmosphere”, came after months of slowing down the negotiations despite agreeing on the draft peace agreement last March.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed sensitive issues that include the demarcation of the common boundaries that extend to a thousand kilometers, while agreeing to continue the dialogue at various levels.

The two countries ’foreign ministries confirmed that the talks represent the most serious efforts so far in the irregular peace track, as the international community hopes that these negotiations will lead to a permanent settlement of the conflict that hinders the development of the South Caucasus strategic region.

It is noteworthy that this conflict is rooted in the late eighties when the Armenian -majority Naguranney Karabakh region separated from Azerbaijan with the support of Yerevan. Any peace agreement would cause a radical shift in this vital region, which includes important ways to transfer energy and intersect the interests of regional and international powers.
