Representative Mai Rushdi, a member of the House of Representatives, came up with a parliamentary question to Chancellor Hanafi Jabali, Speaker of the Council, addressed to the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development Affairs, on the government’s plan to confront the challenges caused by the population increase and educate citizens in it.
A parliamentary question for the government about facing the population increase
In her question, the deputy said: The population increase is currently a challenge to countries of all systems, whether advanced or developing, as there are facts that cannot be ignored about the population problem now because it is as much as it affects the individual and society, as its dimensions exceeded the regional borders to the world until it is imposed on the international community to confront and address it.
She emphasized that the population increase is one of the important issues that remains a permanent and continuous discussion at the parliament and government table, as we witness daily the birth of 5378 children at the rate of a child every second.
She said that the rates of population increase exceed the state’s ability to provide basic services with appropriate quality, and that the rates of population increase do not affect the average per capita share of natural resources, especially water, energy and agricultural land, and that the rates of population increase on the ability of the national economy to achieve a high level of human development, and achieve a reduction in unemployment rates.
She emphasized that the issue of population increase is receiving the state’s attention, as it constitutes a major challenge for the Egyptian state, because of the danger to society, which is the decrease in the per capita national product, which requires the necessity of confronting it, as it eliminates the fruits of any achievements of sustainable development plans or the state’s efforts to improve the lives of citizens, especially in the shadow of the new republic that aims to change the reality of Egyptians for the better.
She noted that the population increase in its current size constitutes a tremendous pressure on the general budget of the state, which will be directed against its will to meet the needs and services of citizens instead of creating more economic and development projects that provide a decent life for citizens, and improve its investment climate and contribute to achieving the progress of the Egyptian state and putting it in the ranks of developed countries.
She said that despite the sincere Egyptian efforts made by the state to solve and address the issue of population increase since the thirties of the last century, it is still unable to confront this massive population increase leading to a reduction in the population increase rate in proportion to the state’s resources and the efforts to achieve sustainable development plans.
