The American embassy in Baghdad issued an official warning, on June 11, 2025, advising American citizens not to travel to Iraq, due to the “escalation of regional tensions” that increase security risks.
A statement published by the embassy on its official website stated that Iraq is still classified within the “fourth level: does not travel”, which is the highest level of warning from the US State Department.
The statement pointed out that American citizens in Iraq are facing high risks that include “terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict, and civil unrest”, noting that the ability of the American diplomatic mission in Iraq to provide support to citizens is limited.
The US State Department also ordered the departure of non -primary government employees from the embassy in Baghdad, and prohibited government employees to use Baghdad International Airport because of security threats.
