The ninth day of June falls on the International Archive Day, an annual occasion approved by the International Archive Council in 2007 to enhance awareness of the importance of the archive in preserving human memory and preserving cultural heritage. This day is celebrated globally through activities that highlight the role of documents in documenting national transformations and supporting sustainable development through modern technologies.
In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the National Center for Documentation and Archives celebrated this occasion through an awareness campaign through the X platform, during which it highlighted its achievements in preserving national documents during the period from June 9, 2024 to June 9, 2025, stressing its role in documenting the march of national transformation within the Kingdom’s 2030 vision, through digitization of the archive and facilitating access to the use of artificial intelligence.
The Juma Al -Majid Center for Culture and Heritage, in cooperation with the International University in Beirut, also organized a virtual symposium entitled “Employing modern technologies in archiving: models and applications from the reality of institutions”, scheduled to be held on June 12, 2025, to discuss the role of digital transformation in promoting the effectiveness of documenting.
Other Arab events in countries such as the Emirates and Lebanon have confirmed the importance of the archive as a bridge that connects the past with the present, by employing advanced techniques such as artificial intelligence and blockchain technology to ensure the sustainability and protection of documents, especially in light of the challenges facing cultural heritage in conflict areas.
This day is an occasion to renew international commitment to protect documents from loss and damage, as the archive is an essential pillar for preserving cultural and historical identity. The ninth of June has been chosen to revive this occasion to commemorate the establishment of the International Archive Council on this date of 1948, which has since been seeking to coordinate international efforts in this vital field.
