In late May, the Italian parliamentarian, Angelo Bonelli, stood by sharp criticism of Prime Minister Georgia Miloni, during a session inside the parliament and from the heart of the capital, Rome, against the background of her silence towards what he described as the genocide committed by Israel in Gaza, in an incident that sparked great controversy, and was widely circulated by the Italian and international media.
Bonelli accused Meloni of hypocrisy and lack of courage, expressing his shock from her failing, and said that the Italian people feel disgusting from this silence, asking how a prime minister and a mother can continue the killing of 18,000 children without moving a resident.
In a special dialogue with Cairo 24, the Italian deputy explained his vision towards the developments of the situation in Gaza and the European position, in addition to the demonstrations supporting Gaza in his country, and the text of the dialogue:
What is your assessment of the European position on the war on Gaza?
Europe practiced an unacceptable duplication in dealing with crimes against humanity committed in Gaza. At a time when strict economic sanctions were imposed on Russia, it did not take any similar action against Israel, despite its responsibility for the killing of 60,000 civilians, including 18 thousand children, the destruction of hospitals and schools, and killing men and women who were only asking for sustenance, and describing this European position as shame.
How do you look at the European re -arms plan in light of the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East?
European re -arms is absolute, stressing that weapons only bring more weapons, wars open the door to other wars, and Europe spent more than 600 billion euros in 2024, while what is required is to build a real diplomatic path that places peace in the foreground.
Rome witnessed a massive demonstration yesterday against the war on Gaza and the armament of Israel .. What is your interpretation of this event?
The Italian street is witnessing a wide popular mobilization in rejection of the war and in support of the Palestinian people, and millions of citizens have participated in demonstrations during the past weeks, and the Italian government has become an ethical partner in the crimes committed in Gaza.
What do you think of the position of Rome and the Gorgia Meloni government on the Israeli aggression?
The position of the Italian government is characterized by hypocrisy and collusion, and Prime Minister Meloni refused to suggest my suggestion to cancel military cooperation agreements with Israel, and for me as a father, I feel angry and disgusting regarding the position of the government, which was satisfied with silence in the face of the killing of thousands of children, considering that what was issued about it does not exceed being narrow political accounts.
How do you reside to the Arab world’s position on the war on Gaza?
I call on Arab countries to unite and take a more firm position in order to stop the shooting and end all forms of terrorism, and I also demand an immediate cessation of all forms of economic cooperation with Israel as long as Benjamin Netanyahu remains at the head of the Israeli government.
Are we on the outskirts of a third world war?
I am very anxious, there is no global leader who talks about peace, but everyone talks about weapons and war, I am afraid that we are approaching the outbreak of a third world war.
How do you look at Trump’s decision to attack Iranian nuclear installations? What are the possible repercussions for that?
The American attack on Iranian nuclear establishments, a very dangerous escalation that reflects the endeavor of Trump and Netanyahu towards igniting a new world war, and reshaping the international geopolitical system on the basis of military superiority.
This bombing, which Israel and the United States started, is a flagrant violation of the Geneva Conventions, and bears the risk of igniting a series of catastrophic repercussions in the Middle East and the whole world.
In Rome, the Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Taiani, talked about reducing the escalation after the bombing, but how can we talk about peace while the region burns?
