North Korea disappears electronically: Internet interruption isolates the country for hours

On Saturday, 7 June 2025, North Korea witnessed a large -scale interruption of the Internet that lasted for several hours, which disrupted access to government sites and official news services, strengthening the country’s digital isolation from the world. This interruption, which researchers described as the result of an internal defect and not an electronic attack, affected the communication paths across China and Russia, the two main countries that link North Korea with the global Internet.

Main services such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the official news agency, and the national airline website “Air Corio” have stopped working, while the country’s digital infrastructure has temporarily disappeared from global monitoring systems. According to British researcher Junaid Ali, the services began gradually returning around midday local time, but the exact cause of interruption remained mysterious, with a weighting that is the result of an internal technical problem.

Martin Williams, an expert in the “Stimson” digital infrastructure in Washington, confirmed that the imbalance appears internal, noting that communications are affected by China and Russia. The North Korean authorities did not issue any official comment, and it was not possible to obtain statements from the Cyber Crime Center in South Korea.

It is noteworthy that North Korea imposes strict control on the Internet, as access to the global network is limited to a limited elite of officials, while citizens use an indoor network. Government sites are often used as external advertising tools, while the ability to reach universal content remains non -existent within the country. The incident brings to mind previous interruptions, some of which were associated with cyber attacks, despite Pyongyang’s denial of any involvement in electronic piracy activities.
