A poll conducted by the Israel Democracy Institute and published on Friday showed that most Israelis are skeptical of the war in Gaza’s ability to achieve its main goals: returning the hostages to their homes and defeating Hamas.
According to the Israel Voice Index for the month of May 2025, conducted by the Festival Family Center for Public Opinion Research and Policy, only 37% of Israelis believe that the operation will succeed in returning hostages, and only 38.5% believe that it will defeat Hamas and end its rule in Gaza.
Even among the voters of the Likud party led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, there are great doubts: only 27% believe that the hostages will return, and 31% believe that the operation will defeat Hamas.
The poll also asked about the commitment of US President Donald Trump to Israel’s security and when he was asked: “To what extent do you think that Israel’s security is one of the central considerations of President Trump?”, The audience was divided: 47% believe that Israel’s security is a relatively large or very large pivotal, while 46% believes that it represents a central or very small degree.
The poll also revealed a variation in opinions on humanitarian aid provided to Gaza. When the participants asked whether Israel should increase the flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, 54% answered that, while 38% saw it should.
