An American federal judge ordered the immediate release of Mahmoud Khalil, a graduate of the University of Colombia, from a detention center affiliated with the Immigration and Customs Administration (ICE) in Louisiana, where he spent more than three months against the background of his anti -Israeli war activity on Gaza.
Khalil is one of the most prominent students who were stopped by the Trump administration as part of a campaign targeting the activists who support Palestine, the last of whom is still being arrested, after his arrest last March by elements in civilian clothes inside his university building.
Judge: It does not pose a threat to society
Federal judge, Michael Ferbrons, confirmed, during a hearing on Friday, that Khalil is not considered a threat to society and is not possible to escape, saying: “There is no threat. A point on the line.” He also stressed that the government failed to justify its continued detention, considering that the use of the law in this case is “very rare”.
Accusations without evidence and a weak legal support
The American authorities accused Khalil of promoting the enthusiasm and anti -Semitism, without providing concrete evidence, while a number of students and faculty members supported the Jewish staff legally. He had stated earlier: “The liberation of the Palestinian and Jewish people are interrelated, and one of them cannot be achieved without the other.”
A legal victory in the battle of freedom of expression
The arrest of Khalil sparked widespread controversy in the human rights circles, and was considered an escalation against freedom of expression guaranteed constitutionally, especially since he was not charged with any criminal charge. It is noteworthy that his case was the first in a series of arrests that affected international students supporting Palestine, and the US government faced repeated setbacks in the courts in this context.
His wife gives birth during his arrest and a touching message for his son
During his detention, his American wife, Nour Abdullah, put their first baby. Khalil wrote a letter to his son, in which he said: “I fight for you, and for every Palestinian child who deserves safety and freedom.”
