US President Donald Trump is preparing to meet his Syrian counterpart, Ahmed Al -Shara, tomorrow, Wednesday, in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, according to Reuters news agency on Tuesday.
The official pointed out that the meeting will come within the framework of Trump’s visit to three Gulf countries, which the American president described as a “historic visit”, which began with his arrival in Riyadh, on Tuesday.
For its part, “Agence France Presse” quoted an American source that the meeting will be “brief” and will be held on the sidelines of the region’s leaders.
The British newspaper “The Times” reported, on Monday, that the Sharia will participate in a meeting that brings Trump with a number of regional leaders, including Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, in a move that may pave the way to reduce US sanctions on Damascus.
The newspaper pointed out that Sharia is seeking to use this opportunity to pressure to reduce the sanctions imposed by the United States on Syria for years, which has burdened the Syrian economy after a long war.
The same sources stated that these pressures may include concessions such as allowing American companies to invest in Syrian natural resources, in a deal that may resemble economic understandings that took place in other regions.
Reports also indicated the possibility of Sharia offered initiatives related to joining the Abrahamic agreements, in addition to proposals to establish a demilitarized zone in southern Syria, where Israeli forces are located near the Golan Heights, occupied by Israel in 1967.
On Monday, Trump indicated the possibility of eliminating US sanctions on Syria, in a move that might reflect a shift in American policy towards Damascus.
