A recent scientific study revealed that about half of the population of the planet, approximately 4 billion people, was exposed to an additional month of extreme heat during the past year, as a result of climate change resulting from human activity, in advance burning fossil fuels.
The study, published by specialized scientific organizations, most notably “World Wittar Atripation”, “Climit Central” and the Climate Center of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent, showed that the effects of heat waves have become concrete on all continents, but they often pass without adequate recognition, especially in developing countries.
Free waves are increasing … and health is in danger
According to the study, which covered the period from May 2024 to May 2025, the world witnessed 67 severe heat waves, all of which carry a clear imprint of climate change by human action.
The researchers used simulation methods and comparison between recorded temperatures and what they could have recorded in a world that is not affected by climate change. The results were shocking, as it was found that:
49 percent of the world’s population lived at least 30 additional days of intense heat.
Aruba Island in the Caribbean was the most affected, recording 187 days of extreme heat, an increase of 45 days from the normal rate.
The study deflected “extreme free days” as those that exceed 90 percent of the highest temperatures recorded in the period from 1991 to 2020.
Repeated warnings … and insufficient response
Frederke Otto, climate scientist at Empire College London, said the author, said:
“With every barrel of oil is burned, and every ton of carbon dioxide is released, and every part of the degree of warming, the heat waves will affect more people.”
This report coincides with the approaching day of the work to confront the heat on June 2, which focuses this year on heat stress and sunstroke as increasing health risks.
The heat 2024 .. the highest in history
According to the study, the year 2024 recorded unprecedented record levels in terms of global temperatures, exceeding 2023, which was holding the previous record.
The average temperature increased globally by 1.3 degrees Celsius compared to the levels of the pre -industrial revolution, while this rise in 2024 alone exceeded 1.5 degrees Celsius, which is the symbolic limit stipulated in the Paris Climate Agreement.
Fliced health effects and a lack of data
The report highlighted a disturbing gap in heat -related health data, especially in low -income countries, indicating that while Europe has documented more than 61,000 heat -related deaths during the summer of 2022, data in many global southern countries is either missing or inaccurate, and deaths are often attributed to heart or respiratory diseases.
