Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Wednesday that his country will put forward a draft resolution in the United Nations General Assembly calling for urgent measures to stop the massacre against civilians in Gaza, and to ensure that humanitarian aid is entering the Strip.
Sanchez said, during a hearing in Parliament, that the international community should not remain indifferent to what is happening in Palestine, without revealing the details of the draft resolution or the date of its presentation.
This comes at a time when the Israeli government, which prevents aid to enter Gaza, announced the expansion of its military operations in order to occupy the Strip and displace its population.
“Gaza will be completely destroyed” after the war ended, adding that the residents of the Strip will start “to leave in large numbers to a third country” after they were transferred to the south.
The comments of Smotrich sparked a wide wave of condemnation, especially from the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volcker Turk, who warned that the new Israeli plan threatens the presence of the Palestinians of Gaza “as a group” within the Strip.
On the other hand, Spain stressed in a joint statement with 5 European countries that Israel’s long -term survival in Gaza is a “transgression of a new red line”, and represents a strengthening of any opportunity for a two -state solution.
And Spain recognized the State of Palestine on May 28, 2024, along with Ireland and Norway, and has emerged in recent months as one of the most critical voices of the Benjamin Netanyahu government within the European Union, in a position that raised a remarkable tension in relations with Tel Aviv.
The Spanish parliament was almost unanimously adopted in 2014 a non -binding decision calling for recognition of the Palestinian state.
A small diplomatic crisis erupted between Madrid and the Israeli embassy, after statements by a Spanish minister in which she spoke about a planned genocide in Gaza.
