The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the summons of the Israeli ambassador to Rome, in protest against the shooting incident of a diplomatic delegation, including the Italian Consul in Jerusalem, Alessandro Totino, near the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank.
The summons came after a statement by the Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, in which he demanded the Israeli government with an immediate clarification of what happened, confirming that he spoke with the deputy consul, who was unharmed, but stressed that exposing the diplomats to danger is absolutely unacceptable.
The need to respect international law and ensure the safety of diplomatic missions
The incident occurred when the Israeli occupation army shot directly at a diplomatic delegation that includes ambassadors and consuls from Arab and foreign countries who were on a field visit to Jenin to inspect the humanitarian situation there.
The Italian Foreign Ministry affirmed that it is looking at the incident with great concern, stressing the need to respect international law and ensure the safety of diplomatic missions, while European and international calls are increasing to open a transparent investigation into the incident.
