The Supreme Criminal Court in Iraq sentenced Khairallah Hammadi Garro, one of the senior officials of the security services during the era of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, after he was convicted of mass murders against Iraqi citizens in the 1980s.
Its involvement in massacres and mass graves
A statement issued by the Supreme Judicial Council stated that the accused is responsible for the killing of 198 citizens of the country in 1981, and to participate in mass executions and the burial of the victims in mass graves, while he occupied the position of director of a country security, in addition to other security positions in various governorates.
Targeting opponents and belonging to the Dawa Party
Khairallah Hammadi was accused of carrying out arrest campaigns and killing against those suspected of belonging to the Islamic Dawa Party, linked to Iran, a campaign that witnessed the concealment of the bodies in mass graves during his period of work with repressive bodies.
Torture and killing operations
Iraqi media reported that the accused led torture and killing without judicial orders in Kurdistan and Baghdad. He was arrested as part of a group called “The Five Group”, and it includes five senior officers of the former regime, some of whom were lured from outside Iraq.
