Since the outbreak of the Syrian revolution in 2011, Syrian lands have turned into one of the bloody Bekaa in the modern era, and after the fall of the Syrian regime, some of these mass graves, which include thousands of unidentified bodies, began to reveal thousands of unidentified bodies, most of which are for victims of torture, indiscriminate shelling, or field executions. These graves, whose potential number was estimated at more than 200, is no longer just tragic scenes, but rather compelling documents on the depth of the Syrian catastrophe.
The beginnings of crime: burial without names or farewell
Since the first years of the conflict, the documentation of collective burial cases began in places such as Harasta, Sednaya, Palmyra, Daraa, and Deir Al -Zour. These graves were not just a way to get rid of the bodies, but rather part of an organized policy to hide the effects of violations. Many of the victims were political detainees who died under torture, or civilians during the violent bombing of the opposition areas.
“Grandfism” and horror testimonies
One of the most prominent testimonies came from a former employee of the regime, which was called the “grave excavation”, in which he confirmed the burial of thousands every week from Sednaya prison, using bulldozers, without any documentation or ceremonies. His testimony formed a major article in front of the United Nations committees, and has highlighted the size of the crimes committed behind the closed walls.
“Driver”: trucks that carried the disaster
Another witness, who was working as a driver of a truck belonging to a security apparatus, revealed how he was asked to transport hundreds of bodies per week to secret graves, the bodies were only nomadic, some of them for children and women. This model is repeated in several areas under the control of the regime, indicating a systematic policy, not just individual transgressions.
The graves in the north and south
After the fall of the regime, it appeared in the northern Syrian regions, such as Idlib and parts of Daraa, mass graves containing civilian bodies, some of whom are handcuffed or blindfolded. These discoveries prompted human rights bodies to demand the formation of international investigation committees to inspect the sites.

Multiple certificates confirmed the use of bulldozers to bury tens or hundreds of bodies at once, in operations similar to blurring evidence. The victims were not allowed or informed of their relatives. This method was only a continuation of the concealment approach, as the crime turns from killing to an attempt to erase any trace of it.
