The American Special Envoy to Syria, Thomas Barak, announced his meeting with Syrian President Ahmed Al -Shara and Foreign Minister Asaad Al -Shaibani in Istanbul, in the first official meeting between the two parties after Washington’s decision to lift the sanctions on Damascus.
Barak said in an official statement: Today I met Syrian President Ahmed Al -Shara and Foreign Minister Asaad Al -Shaibani in Istanbul, as part of the implementation of President Donald Trump’s bold decision to open the way towards peace and prosperity in Syria.
Barak explained that the Sharia president expressed his appreciation for the American step, considering that the lifting of sanctions is a positive development that would contribute to the stability of Syria.
He added that this step is in line with the American goal of defeating ISIS, praising what it described as the serious steps taken by the Syrian leadership regarding foreign fighters and relations with Israel.
Sharia receives the Turkish president
In a related development, Syrian President Ahmed Al -Sharaa held an unannounced meeting with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul, and the Turkish presidential office stated that Erdogan expressed during the meeting his welcome to the United States decision to lift sanctions on Syria, considering this an important step towards the stability of the region.
These moves come within the framework of a remarkable shift in international politics towards Damascus, amid indications of a diplomatic rapprochement that may pave the way for a new stage of regional and international relations with Syria.
