US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that his country will raise the sanctions imposed on Syria, noting that this decision came with a direct request from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
“We decided to lift the sanctions on Syria to give this country a new opportunity. Syria has witnessed a lot of misery, and there is a new government that we hope will succeed in achieving stability,” Trump said in statements during his visit to Riyadh.
Trump added: “I spoke lengthy with Prince Muhammad bin Salman about the Syrian situation, and accordingly, my foreign minister will meet soon with his Syrian counterpart to discuss steps to normalize relations.”
Trump sent a message to the Syrian people, saying: “Make us see something special from you for the sake of your future,” stressing that the first American step was taken to open a new door in the relationship with Syria.
