India and Pakistan agreed to withdraw “by late May” border military reinforcements during the most violent military confrontation between them in the past decades, a senior Pakistani security official told Agence France -Presse on Tuesday.
In early May, the fiercest military confrontation took place between the nuclear opponents since the 1999 war. The last crisis began after gunmen opened fire and killed 26 men at a tourist site in the Indian part of Kashmir on April 22.
India has vowed to respond, accusing a group, which said that Islamabad was supporting it, of being behind the attack. Pakistan denied its involvement. And New Delhi launched the night of May 6-7 (May) missiles on Pakistani sites that it said was the group’s camps accusing it of being behind the Bahgham attack. Pakistan rushed to respond.
The confrontation sparked global concerns about the possibility of a comprehensive war. These developments prompted India and Pakistan to send military reinforcements to the border, especially along the “separation line”, which is the boundary in Kashmir, where the military deployment is already strengthened.
Four days of attacks with rockets and drones and artillery, killing at least 60 people and displacing thousands of both sides, announced on May 10 a truce at the initiative of US President Donald Trump.
Two days later, high -ranking military officials from the two countries held a meeting by phone during which they agreed to “direct measures to reduce the number of soldiers sent to the border,” according to the Indian Chiefs of Staff.
These soldiers will withdraw “gradually” to return to “pre -conflict sites by late May,” said a high -ranking official in the Pakistani security apparatus, the French News Agency, provided that his identity is not disclosed.
The official pointed out that “all of these arrangements were supposed to be accomplished in ten days, but delay was recorded.”
In turn, the German news agency quoted intelligence sources that Islamabad and Nodhi agreed to withdraw the forces that were deployed during their last clash to the sites of peace time.
She added that it was agreed to withdraw during the last round of communications through the “hotline” between senior military officials from both sides.
According to the sources of the German News Agency, the two countries will return to the spreading sites at the time of peace along their borders and the monitoring line – the actual borders that divide Kashmir – by the end of May.
It is noteworthy that India and Pakistan are fighting full sovereignty over the Kashmir region since independence from British rule and division in 1947.
