Ukrainian President Folodimir Zellinski questioned Russia’s intentions about the ongoing talks to end the war, noting that the Russian delegation does not have real powers. He said at a joint press conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara that Russia “does not take these negotiations seriously,” describing the Russian delegation as “my photos.”
Zelinski confirmed that the Ukrainian delegation participating in the Istanbul talks, headed by Defense Minister Rustam Omarov, has a full mandate to reach a ceasefire, unlike the Russian delegation, which sees it lacking seriousness.
Lavrov responds and describes Zelinski as “pity”
In a public response from Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov Zellinski described a “compassionate person”, criticizing his request with the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the talks. Lavrov confirmed that Putin himself had suggested negotiation, but without explaining whether he would participate personally.
European accusations
Lavrov was not satisfied with the criticism of Zelinski, but rather attacked European support to Ukraine, and considered that some European capitals – specifically Berlin, Paris, Brussels and London – “do not want peace in Ukraine at all,” adding that Europe is seeking to mobilize Russia instead of supporting the peace path.
