On Friday, US President Donald Trump considered that the war in Ukraine is “absurd”, calling on Moscow to “move” towards a settlement, in a position coinciding with a visit by his envoy Steve Witkev to Russia, where President Vladimir Putin will meet.
Trump wrote on his platform “Truth Social”: “Russia should move,” noting that the war launched by Russia by invading the territory of Ukraine at the beginning of the year 2022 “absurd” and “should not have occurred.”
This came in conjunction with the announcement of the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, that the Russian president is scheduled to meet today, Friday, with the US President’s Special Envoy, Stephen Whitchov, who arrived in Russia, indicating that the two sides will discuss the Ukrainian settlement.
“The meeting will be held,” Peskov said in this regard. “The tireless work continues, of course, and Witakouf, as President Trump’s special envoy, will transfer a message from his boss to Putin, and Putin will listen to, and dialogue will continue on various aspects of the Ukrainian settlement,” Peskov added.
The Kremlin spokesman also continued: “There are many aspects, and the issue is very complicated, and therefore the talks are often long, and this is an important opportunity for us to deliver the main items of Russia’s position, and its main concerns, which President Trump will be informed later, through Witkev.”
Witkeov had arrived in St. Petersburg earlier in the day, and met the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, Kirill Dmitriev, at the Grand Hotel Europe, according to TASS agency.
