The International Court of Justice begins today, Monday, public listening sessions of an advisory opinion regarding Israel’s obligations towards the United Nations, its agencies and bodies in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The court will hold listening sessions for oral pleadings during the period from April 28 to May 2, and 44 countries and 4 international organizations expressed their intention to participate in the pleadings before the court held at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the court’s headquarters.
Procedures before international justice over Israel, the United Nations and the occupied territories
The pleadings come after the United Nations General Assembly, in January 2024, asked the International Court of Justice to issue an advisory opinion on the organization’s commitment and agencies in the occupied Palestinian territories, and since then 45 countries and international organization have submitted written pleadings to the court, in addition to the League of Arab States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
Egypt will present its oral pleading at 4:15 pm (The Hague time – 5:15 Cairo time) for 45 minutes, while the sessions will start at ten in the morning, Hague time, and the United Nations will start oral pleadings, then Palestine is followed by its pleading through 3 sessions: the first at 10:45 am for 45 minutes, the second at 11:45 until 1:00 pm, and the third at 3:00 pm for an hour, then Egypt Followed by Malaysia at 5:00 pm for half an hour.
The listening sessions will be completed on Tuesday morning, as South Africa will be presented at 10:00 am to 10:30, then Algeria from 10:30 to 11:00, and Saudi Arabia offers its pleasure at 11:00 am for half an hour, then Belgium from 11:45 to 12:15 pm, followed by Colombia from 12:15 to 12:45, and will also offer Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, and Spain its oral pleadings, to end Sessions at 5:15 pm.
On Wednesday, 9 countries will be presented, as the sessions begin with the United States’ pleading at 10:00 am, and concludes with Luxembourg pleading at 5:45 pm, and will present Russia, France, Hungary, Turkey, Iran, and Jordan, then Kuwait, its pleasures before the court.
The sessions will be completed on Thursday morning, with the pleadings of the Maldives, Mauritius, Mexico, Namibia, Norway, Pakistan, Panama, Poland, Qatar, Britain, then Indonesia, which offer its pleading at 5:45 pm for half an hour.
On the last day of the listening sessions, China will present the first pleading at 10:00 am for half an hour, then the sessions will be completed with the pleasures of Senegal, Slovenia, Sudan, Switzerland, Comoros, Tunisia, Vanuato, the League of Arab States, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the African Union, until 5:45 pm.
