US President Donald Trump has announced a series of new customs duties targeting several countries around the world, as part of what he described as measures to protect the American economy and hold accountable countries that treat the United States in an unfair way.
In his statements, Trump stressed that the fees will include the imposition of 34% on China, 24% on Japan, 31% on Switzerland, 46% on Vietnam, 32% on Taiwan, and 26% on India, while the European Union will impose 20% fees.
He stressed that the lowest percentage of customs fees will be 10%.
Trump explained that mutual customs duties will start from tomorrow, noting that these fees will not be fully counter, but rather aim to achieve commercial balance.
He criticized India in particular, saying: “India does not treat us fairly,” stressing that it will hold the countries that follow unfair trade policies towards the United States.
Trump also revealed that the American trade deficit amounted to $ 1.2 trillion last year, describing it as “unparalleled record.”
He called on world leaders to cancel their customs fees to achieve fair and balanced trade.
These escalating steps come within the framework of Trump’s efforts to reduce trade deficit and promote US exports, amid expectations of the escalation of trade tensions between the United States and the countries affected by these fees.
