The British government announced its decision to alleviate some sanctions imposed on Syria, in a move aimed at supporting the reconstruction efforts in the country, according to Reuters.

This mitigation includes allowing the return of activities in vital sectors, such as financial services and energy production, which are sectors that have been subject to strict restrictions since the outbreak of the Syrian conflict under President Bashar al -Assad’s rule.

This decision comes within a comprehensive review of British policies towards Syria, where London confirmed that the move does not mean normalizing relations with the Syrian government, but rather aims to facilitate the delivery of aid and improve the living conditions of the Syrians.

The British government stressed that this mitigation will be controlled and will be applied in a way that ensures that the bodies subject to international sanctions do not benefit from these facilities.

Lifting the penalties for the Syrian defense and interior ministries

Earlier in the day, Britain filed the sanctions imposed on the Syrian defense ministries, the Syrian interior and intelligence services, which were imposed during the presidency of Bashar al -Assad.

According to Reuters, the West reconsidered its approach towards Syria, after rebel forces led by the Headquarters for the Liberation of Al -Sham toppled Assad from his position as a president in December after more than 13 years of the civil war.
