China announced the lifting of customs duties on American goods from 84%to 125%, starting tomorrow, Saturday, in a direct response to the cumulative customs duties announced by US President Donald Trump yesterday, which raised the definitions of Chinese goods to 145%.
The Customs Definitions Committee of the Chinese State Council, in a statement carried by the “CNBC” network, stated that the United States’ continuation of imposing high customs duties “does not have any economic feasibility and will become ridiculous in the history of the global economy”, stressing that China will ignore such measures if it continues.
In a related context, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce filed a lawsuit against the United States before the mechanism of settling disputes at the World Trade Organization, in protest against the recent increases in the fees.
The White House had made it clear that the fees imposed include 125% on Chinese goods, in addition to 20% customs tariffs linked to American accusations of Beijing not to combat the smuggling of the deadly fentanel anesthetic to American territory.
