The United Kingdom witnessed a rare and unique medical condition, after a fetus underwent a “temporary birth” operation outside the womb of his mother, with the aim of saving her life from ovarian cancer, before returning to the womb and completing his growth until his normal birth after weeks.
According to, Sun, the 4 -week -old British child, “Ravieri”, survived one of the rarest surgeries that were performed for his mother, “Lucy Isaac”, during her pregnancy.
Lucy, a 32 -year -old teacher for people with special needs, had discovered ovarian cancer in the twelfth week of pregnancy, after undergoing a routine examination using ultrasound.
In the face of this dangerous diagnosis, doctors at John Radcliffe Hospital warned that waiting for the date of birth may endanger the life of the mother, as the tumor can spread quickly.
With the progress of pregnancy, it was not possible to perform the usual surgery using the “key hole” technique, which prompted the medical team to suggest a rare and complex surgery.
The surgery included lifting the uterus of Lucy completely from her stomach, with the fetus remaining inside it, in order to allow the doctors to examine the ovaries and eradicate the cancer cells that were found in both.
To avoid severe risks to the mother and fetus, the uterus was carefully wrapped using sterile gauze, while maintaining its connection to the umbilical cord and the rest of the vital organs. During the surgery, the fetus’s heartbeat and vital functions continued to be fully accurately for two hours, until the uterus returned to its position, so that the fetus completed its growth inside the bowels of his mother.
Indeed, the surgery succeeded despite its extreme complexity, as it was found that the cancer was in the second stage, and it began to invade the surrounding tissues. However, the medical team, consisting of 15 specialists, managed to control the tumor, and continued Lucy safely until she put her newborn “Ravieri” safely.
This process is one of the rarest medical procedures that have been implemented around the world, which makes it an exceptional medical achievement and a dual rescue of the life of a mother and her child at the same time.
