The low level of the Caspian Sea has led to significant changes in the coastal line of three Russian regions.

In the Astrakhan region, changes appeared in the Volga River Delta and new islands were formed, while several islands in the Calcia region turned into a island, and the sea coast in the Russian Republic of Dagestan retreated to a distance of several kilometers, and the Gulf of Astrakhan almost disappeared completely, according to the Volga and Caspian branch of the Russian Fish Wealth Institute.

It is noteworthy that the low level of the Caspian Sea has continued since the mid -nineties of the last century, as it decreased by 0.8 meters since 2020. This decrease comes as a result of the decrease in the annual flow of the Volga River, as a major source of sea water. Last August, Russian President Vladimir Putin was assigned to conduct a scientific analysis to address the problem of the Caspian sea receding.

The Caspian Sea is the largest closed water basin in the world, and it includes more than 130 rivers, most notably the Volga, Urals, Terik, Swalak and Samour. Five countries, which are Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Iran.
