Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Major General Elie Carvit, chose a new head of the Shin Bet Internal Security Service, to replace Ronin Bar, whom the government decided to dismiss in a move that sparked widespread controversy in Israel, where Netanyahu concluded that Carvit is the most efficient to lead the agency, among 7 candidates for the position, especially after the strong strike that Israel witnessed in the Flood of Al -Aqsa 2023.
The appointment of Carvit is still suspended due to the decision of the Israeli Supreme Court to freeze Ronin Bar’s dismissal until the case was separated on April 8, which reflects the increasing crisis between the Netanyahu government and the judicial authority in Israel.
Who is Eli Carvit?
Eli Charvit was born in 1966 in Kibbutz Sidé Bokir in the Negev desert, and served in the Israeli navy since 1985, moving between several prominent military positions, until he took the leadership of the Israeli Navy in 2016, and he remained in this position until his retirement in 2021, after that, he moved to work in the private sector, where he held a high position in the field of renewable energy at the Tadran Company, then took the presidency of Dest. Solichon, a subsidiary of Rafael, specialized in marine defense systems in Israel.
During his service as the commander of the Israeli Navy, he led a series of secret operations against Iranian ships across the Middle East Maritime Zone, and supervised complex operations systems against Hamas and Hezbollah.
Carvit appointment provokes a state of controversy
Carvit sparked head of the Shin Bet in a state of controversy in Israel, especially since he has never worked in internal intelligence, and does not speak Arabic, as he lacks experience in the internal and Palestinian security files, which is the main role of the Shin Bet President, and his opposition stances of some government policies, and his previous support for protests against judicial amendments may cause differences within the security establishment itself, according to the Hebrew media.
“Carvit was an excellent commander, but he does not have any intelligence background or rehabilitation in this field, the considerations that led to his appointment, after years of his departure from the military frameworks, raising many questions,” said Knesset member Avigdor Lieberman, who was Minister of the occupation army when the appointment of Carvit as the commander of the Naval Weapon.
The state of criticism of the United States, the Israeli ally, which plays a role in shaping its internal and external policies, and the American Republican Senator Lindsay Graham, directed sharp criticism of the appointment to Carvit as president of the Shabak, describing the decision as a problem and may cause unnecessary tension between Washington and Tel Aviv at a sensitive political moment.
Graham, who is close to US President Donald Trump, known for his strong support for Israel, said in a post on the X platform, which is certain that America has no better friend than Israel, but the appointment of Carvit to this position is a worrying decision.
